This post is especially for [livejournal.com profile] perspicuity, [livejournal.com profile] whitebird, and [livejournal.com profile] deguspice. And also[livejournal.com profile] chocorua if you're listening and have any suggestions.

I tested all of my other banking like websites - the other bank that I have to access, paypal, credit cards, etc. All of them worked. My problem is specifically with the Instustion for Savings in Newburyport.

Here are the details of how I did my migration: I did NOT use the mac migration assistant.
  • All of my applications, with the exception of some games, were installed fresh from disks or new downloads.
  • Chrome was able to grab my links and settings through the web for itself. (thank google, it's easy, but I'm not sure I like that you know that much about me)
  • I used file sharing between the two computers via an ethernet cable to do drag and drop transfer of all my data files.
  • Thunderbird was the biggest problem, as it's user information was in a hidden directory - once I unhid the directory, I was able to get all my email, settings, etc, to transfer by carefully putting the old in the correct place on the new.
I spent quite a while on the phone with the tech person at the bank. The error that I get is that the bank website "takes to long to respond" and the browser timesout. The bank tech looked at the logs and it's hanging between me sending my password and it acknowledging it. Old mac is running osx 10.7.4, new is running 10.8. bank tech person says that other users have gotten on with 10.8.

It occurs to me that the one thing I haven't done since set-up is a reboot of new machine. Going to do a backup, and then reboot now.

UPDATE: robooting did not magically make this work.

Browsers that I use maintain their own SSL certificate validation code, so unless MacOS provides some service, that can't be the common point of failure. Which leaves DNS as a potential issue: servers, connection security or default domains could be different between the two systems. This is all supposed to be encrypted, but I might be able to get some sigint from just watching the size and timing of the packets.

I don't know if this is at all relevant, but I can only log into my bank from certain browsers. Others it hands between the user name and password screens. As I update my various browsers, it sometimes changes which ones work with my bank, so when one hangs, I try another browser. :/

Thanks. I have tried all the browsers I'm willing to install. It's just really weird because it works on all of them on the old Mac and none of them on the new.

An odd question, but have you ensured that you've installed java on the new machine?

Go to oracle.com, downloads, on the left look for "java for your computer", and it should direct you to version 7 update 6.

Okay, then I have two more suggestions:

1. See if there are any cookies from the financial website in question that migrated over from your original machine, they might be hardware specific.

2. Create a second account on your new machine and see if it can connect.

1. I always have my browser clear cookies on exit, but on top of that, as I said earlier, the browser was new. I did not transfer an application files, only data files. I set up new accounts on the new machines, they aren't even named the same. (small differences are still different, to a computer)

2. Just created a "test" account on new machine. Still can't log into bank.

wellllll.... do you have access to a HD large enough to copy your old account to? by which i mean? do you have a backup?

i'm not sure how you migrated was "clean"; i would suggest doing it again, but a "different" way. probably have to wipe your "new" account (or rename it, if possible, so it's "out of the way")...

different way. in a nutshell, drag your "home account" contents to a HD, copy it all; then create a new user, and then drag your data over. that generally works 100% for me. i actually just upgraded my HD in my laptop, and used this method. works.

other than that, i can't think of any good reason why your system isn't working.

i'd create a "guest" or "test" account from scratch, and then try that with your bank. if that works, it is indeed something weird in your transferred account data/cache. i would guess something corrupted in a preferences file.

1. I have a time machine backup. However, I DO NOT WANT some of the applications on that drive anywhere near the new machine.

2. As stated somewhere, I did my migration by giving myself a new account on new mac, installing the software I wanted from disk or new download, and moving ONLY my data files. Finding Thunderbird's data files was challenging, but I got it in the end. Everything else works properly.

3. DO NOT WANT old apps from old machine on new. Some are broken in mysterious ways. New installations actually work. (Specifically, Open Office, and M$Word)

4. The "system" works. The only website that is giving me grief is this ONE bank, all the rest are fine.

5. just tried that. still can't log into bank.
