because I have nothing better to do on a saturday night....

Here is a lyric that I've heard many, many times, but tonight I found another layer of meaning in it.

(From Simon and Garfunkel's "Slip Sliding Away")

"Whoah and I know a man, he came from my hometown
He wore his passion for his woman like a thorny crown
He said dolores, I live in fear
My love for you is so overpowering, I'm afraid that I will disappear"

I think this is kind of love gone wrong. This seems like the kind of love that might lead to this kind of depression that is seen in the next verse of the same song:

"I know a woman, (who) became a wife
These are the very words she uses to describe her life
She said a good day ain't got no rain
She said a bad day is when I lie in the bed
And I think of things that might have been"

Now, I've had days like that, thankfully they are far behind me now. But when I think back on those times, I was always looking for that kind of overpowering love that would solve all my problems. It turns out that life just isn't like that. At least, not for me. Damn, I was so messed up for so long, it takes some getting used to, seeing the world for what it is.

Been there. Still trying to figure the world out.

(*hugs!*)

What gets me is the "wore his passion....like a thorny crown". Could read all sorts of stuff into that.

hugs!

sure could, but what caught me was the very obvious reference that I had never noticed before, despite having listened to that song repeatedly for decades.
