well, thanks to my wonderful geeky friends with google fu, and a little bit of help from the folks at the apple store, I have successfully migrated Thunderbird and all of it's settings and my email dating back as far as 2004 to my new mackbook. 
YAY!

relating to your browser settings / banking issues, this could be part of the problem.

which is to say, how they migrated?

i usually just copy my user account top to bottom, and all the apps i'm interested in (usually stored in their own "new apps" dir), and it just works.

if you copied over setting from the old computer, including for lack of a better phrase "old identity files", you might have issues.
