Bad Ponies! [personal profile] quietann came up to ride.  We went out on the road, but our travels were fairly short because of ....  goats.....  There's a goat farmer down the street from me.  And even though both Trump and Minnie have been turned out with goats in the past, they seem to have forgotten.  They were very bad.  Trump balked and stood, but Minnie took this as a good excuse to back up and spin around.  A. rode it well, even when Minnie backed into the snowbank on the side of the road and sat in it.  But that was about the end of that, and we turned for home. Homegoing was half jig, but there were no further events.

*very* bad ponies, but not disastrous ones. I'm now feeling a bit proud of myself just for staying on. And I hope Minnie is feeling better... I wish I had time to come up and give her a good brushing.

Under the circumstances, devoting myself to staying on Minnie, whatever the result, seemed like the best choice. Blacktop road is a hard surface to land on, and even a voluntary (emergency) dismount would have hurt. I also knew that however scared she was, she would stay with Trumpie, and J had Trumpie under control (99%). Had Trumpie been calm about the goats, I suspect that Minnie would have followed him past them, albeit probably sidling and spooking all the way.

hee, that makes for a very funny mental image: horse sitting in snowbank with rider still mounted [is that correct terminology?], both with very confused looks on faces.
Sorry for the ride cut short...

Yes, it's a funny image, but the looks were not of confusion, rather of fear. And I was not laughing either. It was a bit dangerous for all of us. Sometimes discretion (giving up) is really the better part of valor. I'm glad we got home safe. A. is justifiably proud of staying on.

I agree with J, having been the rider in question. It is very freaky when all of a sudden the horse's hind end just isn't behind one anymore. But in retrospect, yes, it's an amusing image.
