Yesterday I had a lesson with my DQ. (If you don't know what a DQ is in the horse world, I can't explain it to you.) My right shoulder is still a little forward, and my right leg a little too back, but it's getting better.  Trump was good, when I rode him right.  Afterwards, I went to check out a horse for sale at the barn of another trainer.  Nice looking horse. Big. I'm going to make an appointment to actually try him for late next week. If I still like him, I'll take some pictures.  He's pricy, but 6 yrs old with excellent sport-horse breeding. Not the breeding matters much to me in a gelding. On first check, he's got big enough feet and legs to support the rest of him, very people friendly, and calm on the ground. Next to see how he moves and what he feels like and if he's calm and sane enough that [profile] chocorua can walk him around safely, both mounted and for ground handling.  If he passes all that (which would seriously surprise me) then we can talk to the vet.

Today, Alice rode Trump and worked on her position while jumping. They did some excellent work today. I rode Minnie. She was an angel. So much so that I pointed her at a couple of 2' jumps.  She wanted to rush at them, but let me keep her slow.  That was excellent. Then we went on a short walk around the hayfields.  I held Minnie back while Alice galloped Trump around the big field. She stood still for most of it, and while she was clearly upset, she wasn't bad. Such a good girl.

Why are you looking for another horse? for a family ride thing?

J can explain it more, but basically if she wants to go back to competing, neither of the current horses are up to the level of competition she wants.

So that I can advance beyond what Trump is physically capable of doing. Trump is limited by his poor eyesight (that took us several years to figure out) to a level below where I have ridden in the past, and not only would I like to do that again, I have hopes of going higher. For that I need a different horse. I can either buy an inexperienced horse and pray, like I did with Trump, or I can buy something with a bit of training on it, which I think is a wiser choice at this point in my life. (I'm not getting any younger.)
I'm not even technically 'looking' for a horse right now, this one just happens to be close, and the trainer called me because she knows me and thinks it might be a good personality match.

OMG good Minnie! Now you know what it feels like for me when she sees a jump :)

BTW Monday through Wednesday are supposed to be very warm; if it's cooler later in the week, maybe I could juggle my work schedule and come up a different day?

Also, it would amaze me too if the Big Guy meets all your criteria, but...

I think we'll be OK in the morning, in the indoor on Tuesday. The lows are still in the lower 60's, it won't get to 90 all at once. does 9:30 work?
And yes, I know what it feels like on Minnie... I jumped her quite a bit when she was younger, and I assure you, she wasn't any slower.

OK, Tuesday morning 9:30 is fine. You are right; it should be cooler in the morning. Just don't want any heat-stroked horses or people!

I would bet that if anything, Minnie was *faster* when she was younger. I don't actually feel *scared* by her rushing a jump; it's more like surprise. But I still wish she wouldn't do it!

she's green at it, and i'm not sure she's been schooled at it recently at all, but i've seen her jump 2'3" at least.
